Market Structure Analysis: Trends, Ranges, and Breakdowns

Market structure is the backbone of technical analysis. Understanding if price is trending or ranging completely changes your strategy.

Three Market States

1. Uptrend (Higher Highs and Higher Lows)

Each new high is higher than the previous high. Each new low is higher than the previous low.

Strategy: Buy at support (lower lows), sell at resistance (higher highs). Trend is your friend.

Stop trading shorts until trend breaks.

2. Downtrend (Lower Highs and Lower Lows)

Each new high is lower than the previous high. Each new low is lower than the previous low.

Strategy: Short at resistance (higher highs), cover at support (lower lows). Focus on short setups.

Skip long trades unless trend breaks.

3. Range/Consolidation (No Clear Structure)

Price oscillates between a high and low without making progress. No higher highs or lower lows.

Strategy: Buy at the bottom of range, sell at the top. Fade breakout attempts.

Trade range-bound, not directional.

Identifying Trend Breaks

Uptrend breaks when: Price closes below the most recent support level on high volume, OR price makes a lower low (breaking the uptrend structure).

Downtrend breaks when: Price closes above the most recent resistance level on high volume, OR price makes a higher high (breaking the downtrend structure).

Once trend breaks, reassess. Is a new trend forming? Is a range developing?

The Trend Line

Connect 2+ swing lows in an uptrend (or swing highs in a downtrend) to draw a trend line. The steeper the trend line, the stronger the trend.

When price breaks a trend line decisively, the trend is likely ending.

Action Plan

Today: Open your main chart. Is it trending up, down, or ranging? Draw the structure (higher highs/lows for up, lower highs/lows for down, etc.). Over 2 weeks, observe: Does the structure hold? When it breaks, what happens? Understanding structure is 50% of trading success.
