Fundamental Analysis for Traders: Why Context Matters
Price action traders ignore fundamentals. But fundamental analysis provides context. Knowing the macro trend improves your setups. This guide teaches traders how to use fundamental analysis.
What Is Fundamental Analysis for Traders?
Fundamental analysis examines underlying value: earnings, revenue, growth rates, competitive position. Investors use it to pick stocks for years. Traders use it for context.
Example: A strong breakout on light trading volume might look bullish. But if the company is missing earnings expectations next week, the breakout is risky. Context matters.
The Macro Picture
For crypto: What's happening with regulation? Are institutions buying or selling? Is there a bull run sentiment or bear run sentiment?
For stocks: Are earnings strong? Is the industry growing? Is the Fed raising or lowering rates?
For forex: What's the interest rate differential? Is one country experiencing inflation? Is there geopolitical risk?
This macro context biases your probability edge. Bull macro = higher probability longs. Bear macro = higher probability shorts.
Key Fundamentals to Track
For crypto: Market cap, trading volume, whale wallets, development activity, regulations.
For stocks: P/E ratio, earnings growth, debt levels, cash flow, industry trends.
For forex: Interest rates, inflation, GDP growth, trade balance, employment.
Combining Technicals and Fundamentals
Strong technical setup + bullish fundamentals = High conviction trade
Strong technical setup + bearish fundamentals = Skip or be cautious
Weak technical setup + bullish fundamentals = Wait for technicals to improve
Never fight the macro fundamental trend for a small technical setup.
Action Plan
For your main trading pair/stock, list 3 current fundamental factors affecting it. Next time you find a technical setup, ask: Do fundamentals support this trade? Trade accordingly.
