Broker Selection Guide: Fees, Spreads, and Regulation
Your broker can make or break your trading. Wrong choice = high fees, wide spreads, poor execution, or worse—scams. This guide teaches you to choose safely.
Three Broker Types
1. ECN/STP Brokers (Best for Day Traders)
They route your order directly to the market. Your profit is their commission (usually 0.5-2 pips per trade).
Pros: Tight spreads during high volume, true market prices, lowest conflicts of interest.
Cons: Commission fees, may require minimum account size.
Examples: Interactive Brokers, cTrader brokers like Pepperstone.
2. Market Makers / Bucket Shops (Avoid)
They take the opposite side of your trade. Your loss is their profit. Built-in conflict of interest.
Pros: High leverage available, no commissions (spreads cover their costs).
Cons: Wide spreads, poor execution during volatility, incentive to liquidate your stop losses.
Examples: Many retail Forex brokers, unregulated offshore brokers.
3. Hybrid Brokers (Middle Ground)
Combination of ECN and market maker features.
Examples: Most major brokers (IG, eToro).
Key Selection Criteria
Regulation: Must be regulated by major authorities (FCA, ASIC, CySEC). Check the broker's license.
Spreads: Typical spread should be 1-3 pips (forex), 10-50 basis points (crypto). Beware of wider spreads.
Commissions: If they charge commission, it should be 0.5-2 pips total. Better than market makers with 5-10 pip spreads.
Minimum Deposit: Can you start with your capital? Some brokers require $1,000+.
Leverage: Lower is safer. 1-5x is reasonable, 10x+ is dangerous.
Customer Service: Can you reach them quickly? Test live chat before opening account.
Red Flags (Avoid These Brokers)
- No regulation or offshore-only regulation
- Unrealistic promises ("guaranteed profits")
- Stop losses get hit at suspiciously bad prices
- Withdrawal processing takes weeks
- No customer support
- Spreads widen dramatically during volatility
Action Plan
Open a micro account with 2 regulated brokers (different broker types). Trade the same setup on both. Compare: spreads, execution quality, commission. Choose the one that feels most fair. Stick with regulated brokers—your account safety depends on it.
