Backtesting Software Guide: How to Test Your Strategy

Never trade a strategy live without backtesting it first. This guide teaches you to backtest properly and interpret results.

What Is Backtesting?

Backtesting is testing your trading rules on historical price data. You apply your strategy to the past and see: How many trades? Win rate? Profit/loss?

If backtesting shows 50% win rate, your live trading will likely show ~50% too (if you follow the same rules).

Top Backtesting Tools

TradingView Pine Script Backtest

Pros: Free, simple, great for learning, backtests up to 5000 bars.

Cons: Limited to TradingView data, limited to last 5 years of data.

Forex Tester

Pros: Excellent for forex/crypto, good UI, lots of data available.

Cons: Not free, requires license ($200+).

MT5 Strategy Tester

Pros: Built-in, excellent for coded strategies, lots of data.

Cons: Steep learning curve, requires MetaTrader 5.

How to Backtest Properly

Step 1: Define your rules precisely. "Buy pin bars at support" is too vague. "Buy when price breaks 5-min high of a pin bar formed at daily support after 1-hour consolidation" is specific.

Step 2: Choose a time period (1+ year of data). Test on 2+ years if possible.

Step 3: Set position size (1% per trade). Set stop loss and target.

Step 4: Run the backtest and record: total trades, wins, losses, win rate, profit/loss, maximum drawdown.

Step 5: Verify results by charting a few trades manually. Does the backtest match your rules?

Reading Backtest Results

Win Rate: 50%+ is good, 55%+ is great, 60%+ is excellent.

Profit Factor: (Gross Profit / Gross Loss). Above 1.5 is good, above 2 is excellent.

Maximum Drawdown: How much did the account drop during the worst streak? 10-20% is normal, 30%+ is dangerous.

Consecutive Losses: How many losses in a row? If 10+ consecutive losses, position sizing is critical.

Action Plan

Choose one of your trading strategies. Backtest it on 1 year of historical data. If win rate 55%+, you have a potential edge. If below 55%, refine the rules and backtest again before trading live.
