Leverage Myths

Myth 1: "Leverage makes you rich faster." Reality: Leverage ruins 90% of traders. Faster up = faster down.

Myth 2: "I'll use leverage once I'm profitable." Reality: If you can't manage leverage with small position sizes, leverage won't help with big ones.

Myth 3: "Pros use high leverage." Reality: Most institutional traders use 1-3x leverage. High leverage is for prop traders with strict risk rules.

The Math of Leverage

Without leverage: $10,000 account, 2% stop loss, 1% loss = -$100 drawdown.

With 5x leverage: Same $10,000, but $50,000 notional. 2% move = $1,000 loss. Your stop loss account impact = 10% drawdown.

With 10x leverage: $100,000 notional. 2% move = $10,000 loss. Your stop loss = 100% account loss (liquidation).

The Safe Leverage Framework

Leverage = Maximum Acceptable Drawdown / Typical Stop Loss %

If you can accept 5% drawdown and your stops are 2%, max leverage = 5% / 2% = 2.5x

If you can accept 10% drawdown and your stops are 3%, max leverage = 10% / 3% = 3.3x

When to Use Leverage

Only after:

- You've backtested 100+ trades profitably

- You've traded live for 3 months profitably at 1% position size

- You have >$50,000 account (capital to absorb losses)

- You understand leverage mathematics completely

The 3-Month No-Leverage Test

Trade live for 3 months without leverage. If you're not profitable, leverage won't save you. If you are profitable, you can consider 1.5-2x leverage, not more.
